Final Project thumbnail sketch
Final Project practice painting #1

Alizarin crimson underpainting. Not nearly as dark as I envisioned. For the effect I wanted, I was going to have to cover the whole of the underpainting. The light in darkness was not very apparent here. I liked the perspective though.

Practice painting #2

Phthalo blue underpainting, then covered with a couple of coats of phthalo blue /black. Much more the effect I was looking for. Light in darkness effect more apparent and probably easier to achieve. Watch out for the loaded brushes.

In the final painting, my plan to put in three similar figures was abandoned after I had painted in just the distant figure. It conveyed the same themes I had started out with, more effectively than with all three figures. Much more subtle, less emphatic and less contrived.
